goulding, utah

Getting close to Goulding, UT was my first look at Monument Valley.  We stopped along the way to take a lot of pictures of the famous strip of road that everyone knows (below!), and I got goosebumps when I could finally see the scenery from so many movies that I had seen growing up (Back to the Future?  Cars?  Every Western movie ever??).  SO BEAUTIFUL!

It was ridiculously hot outside, so our first stop was to check into our hotel.  Since it was a spur-of-the-moment trip, the only place to stay that was available was at Gouldings Lodge and Trading Post.  Even though it wasn't right up against those giant rocks, we were still only a couple of miles away from Monument Valley.  The photo below is the view from our balcony.  Perfect!

One of the neat things about Goulding, is that it's where Harry Goulding decided to move to, and he's the one that brought Hollywood to Utah.  He built the house that's still standing there with his wife, which was turned into a museum at some point.  It's free, but it would be worth checking out, even if it wasn't.  I could so live there.

This is one of the buildings from She Wore A Yellow Ribbon (from 1949!).  JOHN WAYNE was in this building!
